The whole notion of psychic abilities is controversial to many people. It presupposes the belief that human beings are more than just a physical body. It requires the belief that we are at our essence, spiritual beings. As spiritual beings we are apparently limited in what we are able to experience and learn on the spiritual plane of existence. Therefore we must inhabit a physical body in order to learn and grow as a spiritual entity.
That’s a lot to believe considering the lack of empirical evidence. Yet millions of people worldwide admit to believing some version of this philosophy. The majority of the world religions postulate a very similar point of view. The Jewish and Christian belief systems both refer to this non-physical part of the human being as a “soul” or spirit. Eastern religions such as Buddhism, Taoism, Hindu etc. all see the physical body as something temporary and non-essential. New Age philosophies strongly reject the notion that we are merely physical beings. So it does appear that the majority of we humans, at some level, do believe that we are more than just a biomechanical machine that just happened to evolve into consciousness.
This then leads to the age-old question, why? Why do literally millions of people believe that they are something more than just physical? Is this something we just “know” at a sub-conscious level? The Greek philosopher Plato proposed an interesting notion which he called the “Transmigration of Souls”. He suggested that as essentially spiritual beings, we existed in a spiritual, ideal realm prior to our physical birth. He believed that the trauma of birth causes us to “forget” that we are spiritual beings, and where we came from. We then spend the rest of our lives, relearning what we truly are – spirits who inhabit a physical body. This suggests that as spirits, we are eternal, and may enter the physical realm many, many times to continue our “education”.
There does seem to be some supporting evidence of this theory. There have been dozens of documented cases where small children have described in great detail, experiences they’ve never had in their lifetime, places they’ve never been, and people they’ve never known. This phenomenon has also been experienced by many adults under hypnosis. Dr. Michael Newton has written several top selling books on this subject. As an accomplished hypnotist, he has compiled hundreds of documented case studies which simply can’t be explained away as people’s imagination. People under hypnosis do not lie or make things up. They simply report what they see and/or experience, no matter what the implications. It’s not uncommon for such people to experience conflicts between their currently held religious beliefs, and that which they experience while under hypnosis. Another area which must be considered when seeking out the truth concerning metaphysical or “psychic” realities, is energy. In his writings about Remote Viewing, author David Morehouse says: “Energy is everything, and everything is energy”. Everything – matter, light, heat, thoughts, our bodies, atoms, molecules -is composed of energy! What we perceive to be solid matter is merely an illusion composed of dense, orderly collections of energy. This is a scientific fact that few people stop to consider when questioning the possibility of psychic abilities or anything non-physical.
Psychic abilities are allegedly based upon the interaction between the energies of one person and another. It’s something that goes on at the spiritual/energy level. What the shaman of years past tuned into, and what the physicist today looks at under an electron microscope, is an ultimate reality composed of pure energy. It appears that modern science is finally catching up with age-old spirituality, and they are one in the same!
So it’s really not such a stretch to believe that there is way more to “reality” than what we perceive with our 5 senses. We believe in electricity, we believe in Microwave Frequencies and X-Rays – yet no one has ever physically seen any of them with the naked eye. These unseen, high-frequency energies are used every day. It seems highly unlikely that they are the only unseen energies at work in our universe.
The purpose of this article is not to convince anyone of psychic phenomenon. Its’ purpose is to help people realize that there’s a lot more to the subject than one might think. It cannot simply be dismissed as bogus, unsubstantiated mysticism. Ultimately a person can choose to believe, or not to believe in psychic abilities. But let them do some diligent research before drawing any conclusions.
